AbilityOne &
NISH (National Industries for the Severely Handicapped,
Inc.)
"We believe that
people with disabilities have a right to live and work in their
home community. BCDC is dedicated to providing them with
the opportunity they need to make this possible."

The
AbilityOne Program provides
employment opportunities to more than 45,000 Americans who are
blind or have other severe disabilities. It is the largest
single source of jobs for such individuals in the United States.
The AbilityOne program uses the purchasing power of the Federal
Government to buy products and services from participating,
community-based nonprofit agencies nationwide, like BCDC, who
are dedicated to training and employment individuals with
disabilities.
To carry out its mission, the AbilityOne committee works closely with National
Industries for the Severely Handicapped (NISH) to assist more than 600
community based nonprofit agencies that obtain Federal contracts through
the program.

In 2001 with the help of Stanadyne Corporation in Washington, NC, BCDC
was awarded a large AbilityOne contract to produce heavy-duty tire inflator
gauges for the Defense Supply Center. The device is used to
monitor and maintain tire pressure on military aircraft and heavy cargo
vehicles. Since 2001, BCDC has been able to continue the AbilityOne
contract thus resulting in providing employment opportunities for people
with disabilities in Beaufort County.
