Mentoring Day -
October 18, 2006
"We believe that
people with disabilities have a right to live and work in their
home community. BCDC is dedicated to providing them with
the opportunity they need to make this possible."

Since 2001, BCDC has been participating in
National Disability Mentoring Day. DMD is designed to bring
students and job seekers with disabilities into the workplace
where they can learn firsthand about career opportunities through
mentoring. For one day, local businesses in the Beaufort County
Area mentor a person with a disability. It is an opportunity for
local businesses to get involved and "job shadow" someone who is
interested in employment. Ideally, participation in DMD can translate into
ongoing relationships, internships, and even job offers.

The Goals of
National Disability Mentoring Day...
-
To enhance
internship and employment opportunities.
-
To promote
recruitment for a more inclusive workforce.
-
To dispel
employers' fears about hiring people.
-
To increase
confidence among students and job seekers.
-
To launch a
year-round effort to foster mentoring opportunities.
The Beaufort County
Developmental Center is a local coordinator of this event. We are always looking for
corporate sponsors as well as mentors and mentees for the event.
